Quick section sizing

Choose the element, enter span and loads: we estimate the minimum depth of the glulam beam, checking bending, shear and deflection. For roofs we calculate the snow load according to NTC 2018.

Preliminary estimate, it does not replace the structural calculation by a qualified engineer. Assumptions: member simply supported and restrained against lateral-torsional buckling, medium-term loads (kmod 0.8), self weight 510 kg/m³, ULS combination 1,30·G + 1,5·Q, γM 1,45, depths in 4 cm steps. Roofs: snow qs = μ1·qsk (CE = Ct = 1), span measured on plan, permanent loads on the slope. X-LAM floor: 1 m strip simply supported, EMMA INDUSTRIE panels and C24 values, gamma method with rolling shear of the transverse layers, kdef 0.8 / 1.0. Vibrations and fire resistance not checked.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about X-LAM panels

Our X-LAM panels go up to 1400 × 350 cm (length × width) and are made of spruce/fir.

It is a cross-laminated timber panel: longitudinal and transverse layers of boards alternate and, once glued, form a single load-bearing element for walls, floors and roofs.

We produce 20 finished thicknesses, from 54 to 300 mm (297 mm nominal), with build-ups from 3 to 9 layers. The full table is in the downloadable X-LAM PDF sheet.

The panels have the C24 strength profile: bending strength fm,k 24.0 N/mm², mean modulus of elasticity 11,000 N/mm², rolling shear strength fr,k 0.7 N/mm² and characteristic density 385 kg/m³.

It depends on loads, supports and thickness. With our quick calculator you can estimate the suitable panel: for example, for a residential floor with 2 kN/m² permanent loads over a 5 m span the estimate is a 165 mm 5-layer panel. The final check is done by the designer with our technical office.

In timber frame the wall is made of many studs with insulation between them; in X-LAM the load-bearing panel is a single continuous element, wrapped by uninterrupted insulation.

Download the X-LAM work sheet, fill in element, span, loads, thickness and area and send it to info@emmaindustrie.it, or use the quote form on the website attaching drawings and CAD files.
